On November 11, the staff of the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy of the FST UL jointly celebrated Lāčplēsis Day - a memorial event for the soldiers who fell for the independence of Latvia.

Creation of Lāčplēsis Day. After the West Russian Volunteer Army was pushed out of Riga in 1919, the fighting spirit of the Latvian Armed Forces against the German/Russian volunteer army was compared to the ‘spirit of Lāčplēsis’. Lāčplēsis is the name of Latvia's mythical warrior hero and directly translates to ‘Bear Slayer’ in English and is a highly regarded symbolic figure in Latvian culture
