Project title: From Whispering Gallery Mode Doped Microspheres to Photonic Integrated Circuits for Advanced Next-Generation Applications
Project contract number: 1.1.1.9/LZP/2/25/190
Research manager (Postdoctoral fellow): Dr. Inga Brice
Project implementation time: 01.01.2026 – 31.12.2028
Total project funding: 183 297.60 EUR
Aim of the project: The aim of the project is to investigate doped whispering gallery mode microspheres and tantalum pentoxide photonic integrated circuits' potential for lasing, optical frequency comb generation, and other advanced photonic applications.
The main objectives of the project are:
1) to fabricate and characterise doped microspheres and optimise the process by creating feedback between the fabrication process and optical quality;
2) to upgrade the testing system setup for quality assessment of photonic integrated circuits and adapt it to minimise losses for generation of nonlinear effects;
3) to test microspheres and PIC potential for advanced photonic applications;
4) to obtain and disseminate new knowledge on their application potential for lasing, generation of optical frequency comb, and other applications.
